pulled out of the sea

The children run back and forth, inside and outside. They play with the mercury thermometer. When I arrived and presented it to them, they were ecstatic, and took the wonders to the tea garden with them, matching the petals from the bouquet on the table. They live their lives guided by it, days stretching out long like liquid on glass.

Like something from the sea, an old acquaintance. Algae, slick on the rocks, folding pieces of jetsam, folding within DNA.

I took a seat at the far end of the table.
We all sat in silence, looking down at our hands for a long time.
